One Way Out – Framed

One Way Out – Framed
Location: Oakham
Game Date: 24/08/2020
Team: Amy & Ian

Theme:
“Talented and somewhat eccentric musician Charlie Lagami is celebrating a big birthday with family and friends.

You arrive to join in the fun only to find the place deserted, all the guests dispersed and Charlie in quite a state, dead in fact.

Charlie has just managed to leave some clues as to the attacker’s identity. Can you eliminate the innocent, reveal the culprit and get the hell out of there before the detectives arrive? Or will you be caught with blood on your hands?”

Framed! Looked great, a well designed and spacious set, yes it may have only been a “living room” but it was a living room done to perfection, it looked lived in and there was solid evidence of a part gone wrong!
Even so there was nothing in the room placed there to obstruct us or cause red herrings, everything had a meaning and a use behind its placement and that gave the set (And game) some deeper layers that really aided the immersion.
Couple a beautiful set with a lovely soundtrack and it was a realistic and immersive place to spend an hour.
The room was large, MORE than large enough to fit the max of 8 people (don’t worry at first, you wont be in the hallway for long) and the lighting was excellent and never impacted game play.

Game Play:
An open game that had many, many different puzzle types. Observation, logic, word, taste, codebreaking, and searching. This is a very search heavy room, but it’s not to its detriment (It is perfect for larger teams!)
All the puzzles were bespoke and interesting, the main aim of the game is to narrow down the murder subjects and this is done very cleverly through puzzles relating to each of the suspects. Very, very nicely done and something that is quite unique.
There were a few puzzles we had not seen before and these moments were lovely and gave the game an edge that can only be found in independent companies.
The puzzles were all perfectly on theme, logical and considering the majority of the game takes place in one room, there was a lovely sense of discovery, with great ah-ha moments that came thick and fast.
Flow was great, there is a MASSIVE amount of puzzling to get through in this room and the slick puzzle desgin and smooth flow meant that we were kept moving freely through the room at all times.
Signposting was abundent, and at times a little on the nose. However, this complimented the game nicely as it helped keep that pacey flow that the game benefitted from.
A very well thought out and implemented game that will be a challenge for smaller teams but will never leave anyone in a big team standing around for long!

Clue System:
Clues were delivered via voice over in the room.

Game Host:
Tess was our game host and she was very accomodating and welcoming (she was also accompanied by her daughter Molly, and Tom from Escapologic who popped in to say hi!) Her brief was thorough and delivered well, and the game introduction was done with a great sense of humour!
She delivered clues with absoloute precision throughout the game.

Covid19 Safety:
We felt very safe at One Way Out, the rooms were all very clean and facemasks were required at all times, by all parties.

Did we escape?
Yes, in 53 minutes (70 minute Game!)
