Escapologic – 13utcher

Escapologic – 13utcher. Game Date 22/08/2016. Team: Amy, Ian, Jackie, Mark & Richard

Well, it had come to this… our 5th and final game at Escapologic. 13utcher. A game desgined to mess with your mind and leave you a blubbering mess on the floor… But would it deliver on the promises of being very scary and over 18s only?

Theme:
“Anna and Max have the kind of relationship everyone pretends to find annoying. But really, their friends are just a little bit jealous. Because you can see how much these two people are meant to be together. They just-fit.

Anna is daring and inquisitive, Max is sensible. She encourages him to try new things. He stops her from doing stupid stuff.

Usually.

But not today.

Maybe it’s the sunshine. Maybe it’s the wine. Because today, when Anna finds a randomly-unlocked shutter on a random side street, Max isn’t quick enough to persuade her not to go inside. His mind is on the picnic they’ve just had, the kisses they’ve shared. So what if Anna is intent on seeking out some new dark and gloomy pace to scare him with. It’s just Anna being Anna, right? This is why he loves her.

It’s just an adventure. A dare. It’ll be OK.

And then the shutter bangs down, and everything is very far from OK.”

Where to start, I’ve played a couple of games that have been “saw inspired” and have not delivered… have not been scary and had no atmosphere.

13utcher however, delivered on EVERY level. From having to cross the street to the old shutter featured in the trailer for 13utcher to the briefing, to the air of “bricking it a bit” in our team… before we’d even got in the room we were on edge! The decoration could have come straight out of a horror movie, or Halloween Horror Nights… the attention to detail is astounding. The props felt realistic, the blood seemed fresh and the room was perfectly dingy and demoralising. This was the most immersive yet…

Game Play:
The genius of 13utcher is knowing when the Butcher himself is going to come back at some point in the game. This leads to a growing panic as you get nearer to the time of his arrival. This really packs the pressure on and the brilliant timing means that any logical thoughts (and this room requires logical thinking) are being scrambled by your primal instincts
The room is designed perfectly, the puzzles again are legitimately things you would have to do and think of doing if you ever found yourself in the situation.
13utcher gets into your deepest fears. Every single one of us at some point was terrified and genuinely fearing HIM coming back! At one point I went to a flickering light in another room, and the cage slammed shut, I was BEGGING my team mates to help me get out before he came!!
Then he came, and he said my name. I nearly lost it. My brilliant idea was to shut us all in the final room and be quiet so he didn’t know we were there… great critical thinking there Amy…
Needless to say this was an incredibly exhilarating 60 minutes, our only aim was to get away from this horrible Butcher… It felt like living a real life horror video game. Perfect.

Clue System:
Clues were delivered via the plumbing in the room! Honestly… there was another captive soul of the Butcher’s who could help you out in times of need… he shouted me by name at one point! We could also request clues by shouting down the sink! (We didn’t have to do that!)

Game Host:
Adam was once again our Host & Safe word (and I’m holding him 100% responsible for me getting traumatised in 13utcher!) He was again engageing and obviously loves running this room!

Did we escape?
Thankfully we avoided the Butchers blades and escaped with our lives (but maybe not our nerves) intact!
