Breakout – Spellbound

Breakout – Spellbound
Location: Liverpool
Game Date: 15/08/2019
Team: Amy & Ian

Theme:
“A dangerous magical artifact has gone missing! It’s up to you and your crack team of witches and warlocks to find it before it falls into the wrong hands. The location: an old magical academy, and the perfect cover to sneak in and find it is the annual school reunion!

Will you be able to retrieve the orb from an abandoned classroom before the party goers notice you’re missing?

If you’re discovered, it’ll be more than just magic detention for you…”

Spellbound looked nice, set in a magical classroom, the set was well decorated with attention to detail, and plenty to look at, but not too much “stuff” to put you off, we especially loved the very punny books on the bookshelf, we could have spent so much time just looking at the fun names on them!
The atmosphere in the room was good, and there was a fair amount of immersion within the game.
The room was very well lit, with no issues caused by the lighting. Space was never an issue, this as a lovely, large room that will easily accommodate the maximum of 5 players.

Game Play:
An open game that consisted of a good variety of puzzles, leaning more towards observation but there was some logic, word and interactive puzzles within the room too.
The puzzles were on theme and came from within the world itself for the main part and this led to a good amount of interactivity with the room itself to make some magic happen!
The puzzles were logical, and had nice ah-ha moments. Mostly solvable without interference from the game host, a couple of the puzzles in the room I can see people getting them straight away or really struggling.
Signposting was a little lacking, and a lot of connections were wholly left to the players to make. It was given where needed.
Flow was good, sometimes open games can be a little confusing flow wise but it was clear what our goals were and it was a case of working through the puzzles to reach that goal.
A satisfying game, that had some fun puzzles. A game that would be more of a challenge for beginner teams.

Clue System:
Clues were delivered via a screen.

Game Host:
Chloe was our host and she delivered a good brief, was friendly and professional. Clues were given in a timely manner

Did we escape?
Yes, in 35 minutes. Setting the room record!
